Institute Director, FRCPath, FIBiol, DSc Centre for Experimental Medicine Institute for Anatomy II: Experimental Morphology University Medical Centre Hamburg-Eppendorf After completing his preliminary medical exams, Schumacher moved as a young student to the “science mecca” of the USA, where he studied for a year at the Wistar Institute of Anatomy and Biology in Philadelphia. Back in Kiel, he wrote his doctoral thesis on serological reactions to foreign proteins in mice and received his licence to practise medicine in 1983. Intrigued by human anatomy, he first started work at the Pathology Institute at Kiel University and then changed to Anatomy at Munich University, where he headed projects on AIDS and analysed the causes of seal deaths. In 1991, Udo Schumacher was employed at the University of Southampton for several years and returned to Hamburg University in 1997. Since then, he has been Director of its Institute for Anatomy II (experimental morphology). He is currently researching the significance of residual carbohydrate on tumour progression and on respiratory infections. |

After graduating from the Deutsche Sporthochschule (German Sport University) in Cologne, Prof. Breul then studied for a postdoctorate in biology. He was a scientific assistant at the Anatomy Institute in Cologne and received a postdoctorate qualification in anatomy in 1984, becoming Professor of Anatomy first in Cologne and later at the LMU in Munich from 1987. Since 1995, he has been a lecturer of anatomy for the education of osteopaths and has been conducting regular training events for medical professional associations, especially dentists and orthodontists since 2001. He has been co-editor of various specialist journals such as “DO. Deutsche Zeitschrift für Osteopathie” since 1999.

Prior to joining the museum, Jason was an active museum volunteer for over ten years and donated several artifacts to the collection. He has served as a lecturer with the Missouri Arts Council and as a researcher/benefactor with the Missouri Capitol Museum. He is a member of several local historical groups and is currently pursuing his Doctorate of Health Education through the ATSU School of Health Management – his dissertation is concerns online Museum attendance for students.
Jason makes several international trips each year (Germany, Russia, New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the UK) to promote the principles of osteopathic medicine through exhibits and providing historic research materials for D.O.’s worldwide at various osteopathic conferences. Jason often assists D.O.’s who are required to do a two-year dissertation in clinical research. With the help of Jason, many students will review Dr. Still’s ideas and early writings as a foundation for their current work. He works with the museum to publish a minimum of 4 osteopathic books annually. |

Heike Philippi is a paediatrician who specialises in neuropaediatrics and epileptology. She studied medicine at the universities of Mainz and Munich, received her PhD in 1991 in Mainz and passed the American state examination in the same year (ECFMG). Between 1993 and 2004, she was a scientific assistant and senior physician at the Universitäts-Kinderklinik Mainz, from 2004 to 2007 she was a consultant and acting head of the SPZ (Frankfurt Centre for Social Paediatrics), and she received her postdoctorate degree at the Paediatric Neurology department of the Universitäts-Kinderklinik Heidelberg in 2006. Since March 2007, she has been Medical Director of the SPZ (Frankfurt Centre for Social Paediatrics) with its epilepsy outpatient department. Her research interests include developmental neurology (postural asymmetry, early intervention, general movement analysis) and paediatric epileptology. |

Dr Martin Pöttner graduated in protestant theology, philosophy and sociology at the universities of Marburg and Zürich. He then began teaching at the universities of Marburg and Heidelberg. He gained a professorship in evangelical theory in 2000 in Heidelberg, outside lecturer for New Testament Theology. Prof. Resch is a specialist in physical and rehabilitative medicine. Tom Shaver graduated in 1979 from the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery (COMS), in Des Moines, Iowa, USA. During his time there he was a teaching assistant and teaching fellow in osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM). Between 1980 and 1996, he taught OMM at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, heading the OMM field between 1981 and 1996. In 1995, he won the Northrop Award, i.e. he was selected by the SOMA (student medical association) as the best lecturer in all the osteopathic colleges in the USA. He taught osteopathic principles and practice at the Viennese School for Osteopathy between 1995 and 2003. Since 2001, Tom Shaver has been part of the biodynamics faculty: he teaches biodynamics in the USA, Japan, Germany and Austria. Mark Wilson qualified from the British School of Osteopathy (BSO) in 1989. He has been working at the Foundation for Paediatric Osteopathy, formerly known as the Osteopathic Centre for Children (OCC), since 1993. Mark was the Foundation’s consultant osteopath in charge of the outreach project in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Barnet General Hospital from 1997 and also instigated an osteopathic project in the Hospital’s acute paediatric ward. In December 2007, Mark implemented and continues to run a similar programme at North Middlesex Hospital (whose neonatal and paediatric wards are managed by Great Ormond Street Hospital). Mark is on the faculties of the Foundation and the Sutherland Cranial College and the BSO’s Involuntary Motion Studies. |
